MASON TAKES TOP SPOT WITH SOLID RESULTS
SMALL TYRE CLASS TAKES TOP THREE POSITIONS
When the dust and mud settled on the BRC’s Maxxis May Day Mudfest, held at Searles on Thursday, a new “Top Dog” was announced. The team of Terry Mason and David Brewster, driving the 1600cc K&N Equipment Suzuki Samurai, equipped with Detroit Lockers in both front and rear diffs, crawled over the competition, beating their nearest rival by 40pts despite suffering a bent front differential sustained in the Slalom Course, when the rig slid into a ditch landing heavily on the front left wheel.
The duo proved impossible to beat with a score of 685pts after finishing in the top 10 in four of the six challenges. When asked to comment on his win, Mason said, “This was the best event I have ever taken part in. I just loved the Obstacle Course and the Mini Rubicon. I can’t wait ‘til July!”
Mark Phillips and Sherwin Smith in their Surfers Cafe Suzuki Samurai were one of only three teams who made it through the second run of the Mud Pit. A consistent performance for the rest of the day landed them second in class and second overall, with 645pts, an improvement over the last Mudfest event held in July 2007, when Mark with spotter Dean Springer, finished 8th overall and 4th in class.
New comers William Farnum and Cody Foster, in their Suzuki Samurai, started the final challenge in 9th place with 535pts. The team then proceeded to take 2nd and an additional 105pts in the Mud Pit, giving them both 3rd in class and 3rd overall in their first competitive outing, a result shared by the vehicles previous owner, Mark Western, in the 2006 4x4 Challenge Event.
Most of the Over 33” tyre class had difficulty in the days first two events, including previous event winner Dave Lowe, with last minute replacement Kirk Payne. Although winning the Over 33” Tyre Class, Dave was unable to successfully defend his title, instead taking 4th place with a final score of 622pts. Lowe later commented that he felt it to be a “more level playing field” between the two classes and he “had a ball, and thinks his machine is capable of winning”.
Chris Armstrong returned to competition, after suffering a mishap in his V6 Suzuki Samurai in the Toyo Tires March Safari, which saw him withdraw from that event. With Andrew Croney as spotter, Armstrong took his newly modified and more stable rig through all the challenges, and managed a top ten placing in both the Obstacle Course and Rock Crawl challenges, finishing the day with 595pts, 2nd in the over 33” tyre class, and 5th overall.
Third place in the over 33” tyre class went to the team of Edson Arthur and Timothy Trotman in the Rezults Autoshop Toyota Hilux, which demonstrated excellent suspension articulation in the Rock Crawl and Obstacle Course, capturing 4th and 9th in those challenges on their way to amassing a total of 585pts placing them in 7th overall at the end of the day.
The winner of the sportsmanship prize, a voucher for parts from MPR Sales, was Biddy “Rally Granny” Barber, who won the crowds support with her aggressive driving style, and don’t quite attitude. “It was a great event. There are still one or two things to iron out, but all in all it was fantastic, and I will be back in July.”
Organisers of the event thanked the sponsor Maxxis Tyres, the owner of the land on which the event was held, the marshals, the competitors, and all the spectators for making the event a huge success.
